Hello — and Why We're Building TradeVan

A quick note on who this is for, and why it exists.

2 min read

Welcome — this is the first post on the TradeVan blog, so it felt right to start with why this exists at all.

We didn't set out to build "HVAC software." We set out to watch how small shops actually run their day — how a lead comes in, how a job gets scheduled, how a tech finds out where to go next — and build something that fits into that, instead of asking a shop to change how it works to fit the software.

That difference matters more than it sounds. Most of the tools built for this industry were designed for the biggest players first — the 50-truck operations with a full office staff to run them. Everyone else gets the same software, scaled down, with half the features hidden behind a bigger plan. If you're running a 1-25 person shop, that's not really built for you. It's built for someone much bigger, minus a few things.

TradeVan starts from the other direction. It's built for the shop that's still run by the owner — who's also probably out on jobs, also answering the phone, also the one who notices when a lead goes cold because nobody followed up. Everything in it is meant to earn its place in a day that's already full.

What we're trying to get right

A few things guide how we build:

Nothing extra to pay for. Every feature is included on the plan you're on. No "upgrade to unlock scheduling." If it's useful to a shop your size, it's already there.

Built with real shops, not around them. A lot of what's in TradeVan came directly from watching real day-to-day problems — a missed lead, a double-booked tech, an invoice that took three days to go out because it lived in someone's head. If something in the product feels obvious, it's probably because a shop owner pointed it out first.

Slow and steady over flashy. We'd rather ship something small that actually works than something impressive that adds one more thing to learn. Software should get out of the way, not become its own job.

Where we're starting

Right now, that means the basics done well — capturing every lead, making scheduling and dispatch simple, and letting a job get invoiced from the same place it got booked. Not because that's all that's possible, but because getting that right, for shops like yours, is worth doing properly before adding more.

If you're running a small shop and something here doesn't fit how you work, we'd genuinely like to hear about it. This is still early, and the shops using it now are shaping a lot of what comes next.

Thanks for reading — and for giving this a look.

This is the first post on the TradeVan blog. From here, we'll be writing about the real problems small HVAC shops run into, and how we think about solving them — one post at a time.
